The history of Agay

Although the origins of Agay can be traced back to prehistoric times, it was in the 17th century, when a seigniory was established and the château fortified, that the Bay of Agay took the name by which we know it today and became part of Saint-Raphaël. At the beginning of the last century, after the building of the now famous “Golden Corniche”, Agay began to attract tourists and artists who came from all corners of France to enjoy its sumptuous setting at the edge of the Mediterranean. If the Second World War and the allied landings in Provence put paid to the château and left their mark on the Agay landscape, today the bay is once again a natural haven of peace that continues to welcome travellers to its very special paradise.

The port of Agay

Did you know? Originally named Agathon, meaning “good” in Greek, the port of Agay with its favourable horseshoe shape today remains one of the best natural harbours on the Côte d’Azur. Located on the western shores of the bay of Agay, in high season the little port of the same name welcomes some 200 boats who come to drop anchor in the prettiest of the Mediterranean’s natural harbours. Not far away, the beaches of Agay and the Lido await but you for a fabulous day bathing in their calm clear waters!
