Visit Saint-Nectaire with the family

By car, by bike or by campervan, Saint-Nectaire is easy to reach for a delightful day out with all the family. Lying to the north of Murol and Lake Chambon, Saint-Nectaire has plenty of surprises in store for any youngster with an inquiring mind; you just need to dig a little! First stop the petrifying springs of Saint-Nectaire, only a few meters below ground. A unique curiosity in the region, you’ll be able to discover a 14m waterfall that creates the most incredible art, from sculptures to bas-reliefs, turned to stone by the volcanic water. Not to be missed!

Return to the surface and head off on the trail of the dolmens and menhirs of Saint-Nectaire, to be found throughout the village. The most famous of them is the Dolmen du Parc, a stone giant erected in Celtic times. The perfect spot for a picnic before taking the road back to the campsite!

Visit Saint-Nectaire as a couple

Hand-in-hand, head off to explore Saint-Nectaire and the building that truly dominates the town: the famous Notre-Dame du Mont-Cornadore church, a listed historical monument. Built in lava stone it is considered as one of the gems of Romanesque art in Auvergne. And as the perfect finishing touch, Mont Cornadore offers a breathtaking view over the Château de Murol and the Monts Dore chain of mountains!

After a delicious “truffade” for lunch, a local speciality not to be missed, end the day with a short hike leaving from Saint-Nectaire. Head for the Puy du Châteauneuf, a 7km walk between forest and valley. At the top, take time out to admire the former troglodytic homes carved into the volcanic rock. The perfect photo opportunity if ever there was one!
