It has to be said, that the Manche department is not exactly famous as a top holiday destination... And it’s a great pity because it has much more to offer than its D-Day landing beaches, somewhat cool water temperatures, and grey skies. Today’s objective is to break down all our preconceptions about this little corner of paradise in Normandy, set between the land and the sea, by presenting all the hidden treasures of the Manche. So, off we go on an exploration of the must-see destinations in the Manche!
Mont Saint-Michel
Let’s start with one of the jewels of the Manche: the majestic Mont-Saint-Michel. A magical site, which is unique of its kind in all aspects, and a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is an absolute must. Accessible only at low tide (at high tide, it becomes an island and the waters are impassable, so pay close attention to tide times!), its church, its Gabriel tower and, of course, its abbey. You can also savour the delicious and inimitable Mère Poulard omelette, with its recipe that has remained unchanged since 1888!
Utah Beach
Walking on Utah Beach, one of the D-Day landing beaches is a deeply moving experience. A simple stroll may be enough to remember the men who lost their lives there for Freedom, but if you want to delve a little deeper into these events that changed the face of the world, be sure to pay a visit to the D-Day Museum with the family. You will find a wonderful collection of vehicles, as well as documents and personal accounts that retrace the event from its preparation through to its successful execution. The opportunity to remember and pass on this duty of remembrance to younger generations.
Cap de La Hague
Nestling in the heart of the Cotentin, Cap de La Hague is perfect if you fancy a walk in the great outdoors. Follow the GR 223 or “Customs path” along the Normandy coast, packed with natural landscapes, each one even more stunning than the last. Also, it is here that you will find two other must-see sites in the Manche: Port Racine and Nez de Jobourg! Slip on your walking shoes and prepare to be dazzled!
Nez de Jobourg
In the heart of the cape mentioned above, the Nez de Jobourg is a breathtakingly beautiful natural wonder in all weathers. With some of the highest cliffs in mainland Europe (128 metres above sea level), this area with an end-of-the-world feel offers a stunning natural setting where the power of the elements and the beauty of nature join forces. When the weather is fine, it is possible to glimpse the Channel Islands and as far as the cliffs of Flamanville. Don’t forget to bring your camera to ensure you immortalise this magnificent viewpoint, one of the most beautiful in the Manche!
Cherbourg-en-Cotentin
Now, head for Cherbourg-en-Cotentin which, contrary to what you might believe, is well worth the detour. There are many sites and landmarks to see there, starting with the Liberation Museum, the Cité de la Mer, dedicated to the underwater world, the old castle and its harbour, a major architectural feat for this port when considering it was built in the 18th century! Finally, no visit to Cherbourg would be complete without a tour of the umbrella factory, made famous in the film by Jacques Demy.
The Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Natural Park
The Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Natural Park is a must when on holiday in the Manche and it is a natural paradise for young and old alike. Made up of marshes and polders which are typical of the region, many plant and animal species live there in perfect harmony: nesting birds, endemic plants, bumblebees and even otters! A protected natural haven not to be missed.
Port Racine
Why is Port Racine such an unmissable site in the Manche? There are several reasons why. It is the smallest port in France AND it offers one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the department. A quirky and amazing experience awaits your family, your other half and you, and that’s what we love!
Granville and the island of Jersey
Let’s round off this list with Granville, known as the “Monaco of the North” because it stands on a rock, the same as its namesake in the south. Just a 3-hour train ride from Paris, this charming seaside resort is ideal for a weekend getaway. While you’re there, be sure to visit the Christian Dior museum, stroll around the narrow streets of Haute-Ville and enjoy a walk along one of its many beaches. Above all, be tempted by a delicious dish of scallops or an extra-fresh seafood platter since Granville is the leading shellfish port in France. Your taste buds are in for a wonderful iodine-packed treat!
